Mauro’s Smart Fact #7: Pet First Aid and Emergency Planning Tips

Did you know that April is National Pet First Aid and Emergency Planning Awareness Month?

mauro-emergency-first-aid-preparedness Often in life we find ourselves too distracted by financial responsibilities, work stressors and set obligations to take a moment to think about the basics. Living in good old Southern California, we are often reminded by the press that we should have a written disaster plan and have stored enough emergency supplies to be able to live unassisted for no less than 72 hours.

Well, do you have a plan?  Do you have the supplies set aside?

Your “Plan” -- does it include all members of your family?

As a proud pet parent, your plan must of course include your furry loved one. Being prepared can save their lives, especially if the disaster at-hand prevents you from coming to their aid.

Different disasters require different planning and each potential disaster could easily be its own "Smart Fact." That being said, lets start with the basics:

  1. Identification of your pet: Keep identification tags on your furry loved ones at all times in addition to adding them to a national directory via microchip.
  2. Identification of your veterinarian: Carry a hard copy of your veterinarian’s business card along with the number of your nearest 24 hour pet hospital. Yes hard copy, in addition to programing it into your phone. How many times does your wallet run out of batteries, NEVER.  Give this information to all close friends, neighbors, and family members.
  3. Know your pet’s secret place: Like many of us as children, when lightning strikes, we all have a place in the house that is most comfortable to hide. Like children, pets often have a favorite place to hide when things get scary.  In an emergency where the call to action requires immediate evacuation (fire, etc…) learning beforehand where your pet might likely hide is critical when seconds count.
  4. Identify to first responders that a pet is present: In the mayhem of an active emergency or in the presence of a problem while you are away from your residence, who will speak for your pet to alert first responders of their need for help?
  5. Designate a family member or neighbor to alert the authorities during the time of crisis: Most every pet parent we know has a friend or neighbor that has volunteered to step in should a problem arise when the rest of the family is away.  Does your friend or neighbor have written authority to do so?  A simple letter authorizing your neighbor to act in your place is easy to prepare and gives guidance to third parties in your absence.  Such a letter should list all necessary details related to preferred food, feeding schedules, needed medications and emergency numbers to include your local veterinarian’s contact and after hours information.

But what if no one is home?

We recommend that you purchase and proudly display a pet rescue sign both on and away from the house to alert the authorities.

Although there are several such products available, while attending the Global Pet Expo, both Mauro and I spoke with the owners of Pet Fire Rescue Signs who logically took the next step.  Their signs are designed similar to aluminum street signs with reflective backings, measure 8 ½ by 11 inches and can be attached to an aluminum stake for maximum exposure both upon and away from the home.

Another such company promotes personalized photo identification of each pet to be rescued along with predetermined contact/evacuation information to assist first responders. Visit www.petrescuesigns.com for more information.

Please note, if safety and time permits following the safe evacuation of all pets – removal of pet rescue signs or identification of proper evacuation is important to keep our first responders safe.

Next week, we will address how to create an emergency Preparedness Plan as well as how best to assemble an Emergency Preparedness and First Aid Kit for our beloved pets.

Mauro Pet Counselor – Which Products Are Recommend for Dogs with Alopecia?

This week, we received an interesting question from a fan on Twitter:

mauro-pet-counselor-question

So which products does Mauro Pet Care recommend for dogs with alopecia?

First things first, what is alopecia?

Alopecia is a very common disorder in dogs which often affects a dog's skin, its endocrine system, its lymphatic system, and its immune systems most often causing your loved one to suffer either partial or complete hair loss.

One of the most common causes of alopecia is mange, which is caused by the mite DemodexHair loss can also occur when there is a disruption in the growth of hair follicles, often from infection, trauma, an immune disease, or endocrine system abnormalities. If there are multiple missing patches of hair, it could be associated with an inflammation of the hair follicle. A more widespread area of hair loss, meanwhile, may indicate a more specific disease pattern.  To this end, it is imperative that proper veterinarian care be sought and a proper diagnosis received.  However, once you have received the diagnosis, there are several available all natural methods by which to combat the symptoms that taunt your loved one.

How to treat alopecia in dogs

Two of our most popular products to combat the typical symptoms most often caused by Alopecia and other related disorders are our Hot Spot Healing Solution as well as our rich Leave In Conditioner which is to be applied while wet and left upon the skin.

Our Hot Spot Healing Solution is enriched with pure natural botanicals and essential oils that act as a therapeutic moisturizing, anit-itch formula, providing fast relief for dry, itchy or irritated skin.

The Conditioner (best used in conjunction with our Essential Elements Shampoo) is rich in both Hemp and Argan oils and fortified with vitamins A, E & F.  It contains natural ingredients that also known to act as an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal and as a powerful anti-oxidant rich in Amino Acids and Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils, which nourish, soothe and hydrate the skin, hair and fur.
